Facebook wants to steal your face
this happened to an old boyfriend of mine when general internet use was brand new. he would never leave it. while he already suffered from mental illness of some kind, this pushed him over the edge into paranoid schizophrenia and i think what was termed back then, "internet psychosis." old boyfriend built his first computer himself. it's speed was 70 megahertz and that was sooo impressive.
then he completely lost his mind, convinced the "sufis" were following him and that there was a major "paper trail" on him online.
he was obsessed with the face on mars.
facebook is bad. i'll say it again. if i'd been smarter i would have been able to find my friend without it. just watch out kids. don't get soul-sucked.

I heard on the radio today that facebook gets a million new users PER DAY. there are 62 million users in the US alone and something like 2 billion worldwide. ridiculous.
the disease. it's spreading.
They definitely don't have two billion users worldwide. It's more like 200 million, maybe a little more. But they do have 83 million users in the U.S., as of 3/31.
I'm curious: Why do you draw the line at Facebook? Why not at, say, e-mail? Or Twitter? Or the Internet in general?
Like most media (radio, TV, other Web sites, books, etc.), Facebook is mostly full of garbage, but if used wisely and judiciously, it can be a good thing.
i draw the line at facebook because it offers nothing creative and it doesn't ask anything creative from it's users - thought included.
it offers you games (apps) to play alongside advertising thrown at you because of private information or words used on your page. that's slimy and underhanded on a level too close for comfort.
it pushes itself onto you like a cult: "collect more friends and you'll be popular!" like a multi-level marketing scheme. all phony all baloney.
it makes people think they're socializing and actually have friends as in real life. this is not true. the way facebook operates is not how humans are meant to operate. it locks people in their room thinking they're doing something when they're not.
one of it's games or "apps" is a judgement game where you answer questions about what you think a person is like based on their picture. this condones prejudice and judgement. two things one shoudl always avoid. they are negative human qualities. why invite it into your life so blindly?
i participate in twitter and blogger because they require me to think. on my own. to create.
email: communication with someone else on a personal level, it's one-on-one like a letter. i used to write letters like a maniac. i like staying in touch with people and sharing my life with them and hearing about their lives through the use of words.
twitter: creative. not everyone. some people aren't creative but that's their deal and i don't have to participate in it if i don't want to. it's called blocking. i use twitter to be creative and it allows me that. it makes me think in a new structured literary format. like a sonnet or haiku and that's interesting.
flickr: i love photography. i pay a yearly subcription so i can share my photos with my friends and family and they can download at full size. because i take copious pictures on a level other people don't and that lets me give my friends and family something. it's an offering. and sharing of memories. it's also creative. photo editing is tricky and a really fun challenge. it makes me use my brain and creative sense.
radio is music. loving music is vital to life.
tv is crap. i barely watch because it's so bad. the creativity level on it is shit.
youtube: appreciating other people's efforts at creativity.
the internet: huh? why is this grouped with the others? it's just like a library in your living room. for those like me who love research, it is a dream come true. it educates me and allows me to think in a new and creative way because of it's unique platform.
"facebook used wisely and judiciously." i don't know what that is. wisely? how does one use it wisely? for self-promotion? i'd be interested to hear.
my personal goal in life is to suck up creativity, be engaged in creativity and share my creativity with people who care.
does that help/make sense? it's difficult to explain because it is an instinct. i'm revolted by facebook. i'm sure someone has come up with a better way to explain these ideas about facebook. there's probably a term.
