Still on the other side of the Date Line

it's been five days since guy and i got back, and we're still out of sync. sleeping all day, staying up all night. at first it was a gradual downward slide: sleeping half the day and awake half the night.

i guess it got bad thursday night when the electricity went off. it was 4am and guy and i awoke to the sound of the carbon monoxide alarm restarting. we couldn't go back to sleep so we turned on the tv. and then, shortly therafter, the longest electrical blackout in either of our histories took place.

i'm sure the new record had to do with living all of our adult lives in cities, until last june.

22 hours of darkness!

friday night was a gas. playing cards by candlelight with nothing but a hand-cranked shortwave radio as a soundtrack. we drank 3 bottles of wine and went to bed at 5:30am.

(the picture above was taken on New Year's Day in Tokyo, Japan as the sun set at 5:00pm. we arrived in SFO 9:15am in the morning of New Year's Day.)
